our impact

Founded by Doniece Sandoval in 2013, Lava Mae began by converting public transportation buses into showers + toilets on wheels to deliver hygiene and rekindle dignity for our unhoused neighbors in San Francisco.

Since then, we’ve expanded our new fleet of commercial shower trailers to Los Angeles and East Bay, innovated one-stop monthly Pop-Up Care Villages to dramatically expand access to essential services for people living on the streets, and brought tailored partners alongside our shower service on a regular basis through Hygiene+ programming.

We’ve also launched the first-ever mobile hygiene how-to toolkit that has been downloaded 2,500+ times along with our replication consulting services that help communities from around the globe start mobile hygiene programs modeled after ours.
